While working on my Facebook page today, I noticed just about every one of my friends and the companies that I follow posted some type of remembrance for the day. I went back and forth with my wife wondering if I should post something, say something, post a picture. What can I say that would bring comfort to anyone today? Other people are posting their memories of what they were doing on this day 11 years ago or a picture of the New York skyline with the words, “Never Forget” shadowing the towers. As if we would ever forget. We all remember where we were when we heard the news and probably called our family members to tell them how much we love them. My wife being from a Maryland town just outside of Washington has first hand accounts of friends and co-workers that had been in the Pentagon and working in the District on September 11, 2001.
This is something that we will never forget, but it will fade into our memories and eventually become a topic that our children will learn about in history class. I chose not to post anything to my business or personal Facebook page today, not out of disrespect for the event that occurred, but because so many lives, dreams and families died that day. I chose not to draw attention to the fact that there was and is so much hate in this world. I am proud to live in this country, proud to live in this state of Florida and proud to always have the ability to chase my American dream.
I am sure you frequent one of the many Publix grocery stores in the central Florida area. Did you ever stop to sanitize your cart or grab some coupons and notice the antique looking scale just inside the sliding doors? Or maybe it is just part of your weekly grocery store commute and has never caught your eye. Well, the fact is, just about every Publix store has one. On my sixth trip to Publix just this week (thanks, wife!), I wondered to myself, “why is that there?” I remember reading an article about the scales some time ago, but still could not recall the answer. So after picking up eight of the most random grocery items ever assembled (again…thanks, wife!), I consulted my good friends over at Google. As usual, they were able to provide me with the answer to my weighty question.
In 1930, George W. Jenkins, the founder of Publix, opened his first store in Winter Haven. At that time, it was very rare to have a personal scale in the home as most of us do today and you may have had to pay a penny at other stores to weigh yourself. Publix originally installed the scales as a free service to their customers and continue to put them in new stores today as part of the longstanding tradition. In this area, it may even be common to see a tourist weighing luggage before a flight.
So, the question is…do you dare weigh yourself in public at Publix?
Over the past couple of weeks, I have had the pleasure of working at the new D.R. Horton community located just off Highway 27 in Haines City, Florida. The community of Patterson Groves is currently building beautiful one and two story single family homes starting in the low $120s. Preview the homes on this website. If you’d like to take a look in person, please give me a call, send me a text, e-mail me or contact me through my Facebook page. Hope to see you soon!
